Another pair of physicians for South West Health

Two new physicians Dr. Chris Murphy, surgeon, and Dr. Karma Murphy, family physician, have started working at the Yarmouth Regional Hospital on Aug. 7.

Dr. Chris Murphy grew up in Yarmouth and is happy to return to his home town. He completed his Doctor of Medicine degree at Dalhousie University (2003) and his surgical residency program, also at Dalhousie University (July 2008). He was the recipient of several awards at Dalhousie. He was also recognized for his excellence in teaching and has already demonstrated this dedication in South West Health by accepting a medical student in his first week of practice. His volunteer work includes missions with the Helping Hands Medical Missions in several countries.

Dr. Karma Murphy received her Doctor of Medicine at the University of Alberta (2003) and her postgraduate residency training in family medicine at the Northumberland teaching unit of Dalhousie University, Moncton, New Brunswick (June 2005). She was also the recipient of several awards and scholarships including the CFPC Family Medicine Resident Leadership Award. Since 2005, she has completed various locum positions in family practices and hospitals in Halifax, Dartmouth, Glace Bay, and Saint John. She has been working occasionally in the local prenatal clinic and providing weekend coverage for obstetrics since September, 2006. Her special interest in oncology is “a great benefit to the patients of South West Health,” a hospital spokesperson said. Both Dr. Chris and Karma Murphy look forward to a liaison with the proposed Cancer Care Centre.
