Corp. Grant Webber earns promotion

In his new position, Corp. Webber will join Staff Sergeant Bruno Deveau as a Supervisor/Investigator.

Staff Sgt. Deveau said, “He’s very deserving to get the corporal promotion. He’s been well respected and well liked by the community and I as detachment commander am very pleased he is remaining here as a supervisor.”

Corp. Webber applied for the position in March, when the previous corporal left for a position in Lunenburg Co. He was already acting Supervisor, but received the official word on Aug. 6.

The Sydney, Nova Scotia native originally hadn’t thought of joining the RCMP out of school. He went to the University of Kings College in Halifax, and later spent two years in France studying history.

While working for the RCMP as a summer student, it was suggested he should join as an officer. He sent in an application and a few months later he was off for training.

Being bilingual, Corp. Webber decided to take his training in French, and his first posting was Saint-Jérôme, Quebec.

After Quebec, he transferred to Ottawa, working on motorcycle gangs for criminal intelligence, which he says was pretty exciting.

“Then I decided I wanted to come back to Nova Scotia, and they sent me to Liverpool,” said Corp. Webber. He added that working here is quite different than federal policing.

He wanted to come back to Nova Scotia to work before he retired.

“I didn’t want to retire from the Mounted Police without having worn the uniform.”

He explained that in Ontario and Quebec, the RCMP acts on the federal level, since they have their own provincial police. In those provinces, RCMP officers wear plain clothes.

Outside of work, Corp. Webber is very active within the community.

“My passions are acting and sailing,” he said.

He acts with Winds of Change, sits on the Queens County Health Board and is President of the Brooklyn Marina.

He is also well known for his Community Policing Officer work. Const. Laura Cormier is taking over that position.

In 2006, Corp. Webber received a Mounted Police Foundation national President’s Award for his ongoing charitable and community activities, both in and out of uniform.
