The Municipality of Barrington is being sued for close to three quarters of a million dollars after a developer says he discovered oil contamination on a property he bought from it.
“The Municipality promised me a clean bill of health and then we found that afterwards,” said Ken Anthony, gesturing towards land that he says contains a “motherlode” of old oil that will take at least half a million to remove.

Anthony is developing the property, formerly the site of the old Barrington High school, into an apartment and strip mall complex.

He found two other oil-contaminated spots on the property as well.

The Municipality of Barrington owns the property but it has been used for educational purposes for many years. In June 2006, the Tri-County School Board returned it to the MoB.

Anthony says the cost for the clean up has been substantial, in excess of $140,000 to date with estimates of $600,000 for completion. The discovery has significantly changed the plans and time line for the commercial aspect of his development.

“My preference would be to sue Tri-County Regional School Board directly, but as per the provisions of the Environmental Act, I have to go after the body I purchased the property from and they in turn would have to pursue on their end if so choose. I must say, the Municipality has been exemplary in this matter, the school board, however, has not been as cooperative,” said Anthony.

Warden Louise Halliday could not comment on the matter, as all litigation is discussed in closed council sessions.

I agree with you George. If the school had to be torn down because of everything that they said was wrong, how can someone else buy it and make something out of it.I just dont undrstand it myself. I dont think that the High School should have been built there in Oak Park.Like you said I have nothing against Oak Park but there is nothing there for the kids. They could have found land somewhere in barrington Im sure near everything else to build this shcool.

As a person that was born and raised in the Barrington area specifically Oak Park,It just amazes me how the old High School couldn't be cleaned and continue being used as a school, but a developer could buy it and turn it into Condos. My second comment is in ref: to the placment of the New School.Amazing approx. 100 Hundred families lived on Sherose Island but now it is not it can't house a high school, where some of the facilities already est. there are excellent, instead they put the High School in Oak Park,Nothing against Oak Park Mind you I am from there its is a beautiful place, but it seems like you want the kids to go to school in the middle of nowhere,it seems to me that the elected coucillors don't run the town but developers and people with big money and don't know what they are doing do.The age old story the rich get richer and the poor get poorer,Just amazes me that in 2008 things in Barrington haven't really changed at all.But I still love the place and I always will but I am concerned.
