Excitement is taking off for the first air show in Yarmouth in 17 years, says executive director Greg Moulaison.
The Sept. 13 and 14 event will feature performances by the world famous Snowbirds, Skyhawks (Canadian Forces parachuting team) and a flash fire jet truck that goes 350 m.p.h. in seven seconds, in addition to many other attractions.
“The logistics of this is just phenomenal,” said Moulaison. "But it’s fun.”
Static displays will see approximately 30 aircraft on the ground.
Other major attractions include a Hercules, American stunt pilot Pete McLeod, a Griffin helicopter, three Harvard heritage aircraft and a CF-18 Hornet.
In the VIP tent, a plane being constructed by Pubnico resident Ron Belliveau will also be on display.
“He’s volunteered to bring it here and people can see it in its various stages,” said Moulaison.
The show will have a practice day for performers on Sept. 12 at the Yarmouth airport.
In-air performances are scheduled for 1-4 p.m. on Sept. 13 and 14 and static displays will be open from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m.
Impressive economic spin-offs are projected. A crowd of at least 6,000 is expected and 200 room nights will be required for performers alone.
The response from the community at large is excellent according to Moulaison.
“Volunteers are coming forward and many organizations are assisting,” he said.
Yarmouth County Ground Search & Rescue will be handling all the parking and benefiting from the funds raised through this. They’ll also be assisting with the Starrs Road closure between PJ Motor Sports and the Small Gaines Road from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sept. 13 and 14.
Members of the Seafest Pageant committee will sell programs and receive 50 per cent of the revenue.
Flying association members will be helping out to promote flying in the area.
A 7 p.m. dinner will be held at Rudders Seafood Restaurant & Brew Pub for all performers on Saturday, Sept. 13, followed by a “greet the public” opportunity around 8:45 p.m.
Moulaison says more volunteers are required for a variety of miscellaneous duties. People can see him at his office at the Yarmouth airport between 1 and 3 p.m. daily or call 902-740-0767.
Tickets for the air show are now on sale Monday to Friday at the Mariners Centre: $12 for adult, $8 for children 12 and under.
