RCMP link three thefts, break-ins to same group of suspects
Yarmouth Town RCMP report
During the period of July 21 to Aug. 3, the Yarmouth town RCMP detachment responded to 141 calls for service. This included responding to 23 false alarms at businesses in the town – a high number for a two-week period.
Other calls for service included nine 911 hang-ups, two shoplifters, three fraud investigations, eight thefts from autos, three mischief complaints, one break and enter into a residence, five assaults, three being drunk in a public place, eight causing a disturbance, four traffic collisions, two break and enters into businesses, three Mental Health Act investigations, one arson investigation and 15 other Criminal Code complaints.
The following is a summary of some of the calls received:
•July 22, 4:47 p.m., report from the Parade Street Animal Hospital that a male was breaking into vehicles and had headed west on Parade Street. Officers attended and located and arrested a male suspect.
•July 22, 5:20 p.m., report of an adult female shoplifter at Zellers.
•July 22, 5:57 p.m., report of a stray dog wandering on Starrs Road, officers attended and located the dog, which was taken to the SPCA.
•July 23, 3:49 a.m., received a call of three males breaking into vehicles on Sprucewood Drive. Officers attended and the police dog unit was called in. Three males were located and arrested nearby at the corner of Sprucewood Drive and Pleasant Street. Matter going to court.
•July 23, 2:26 p.m., report of a young female shoplifter at Zellers.
•July 24, 12:55 a.m. received a report that at an earlier time an iPod and charger had been stolen from a vehicle in the north end of Pleasant Street. An investigation led investigators back to the three individuals who had been arrested the day before on the corner of Sprucewood Drive.
•July 24, 1:56 a.m., received a call from a resident on Maple Drive in Brooklyn of a break and enter at a residence the previous day. An investigation led investigators back to the trio arrested on Sprucewood Drive.
•July 26, 3:14 p.m., a 911 call was placed from a payphone on Water Street. The caller had dialed 911 to find out the number for telephone information. Officers attended and located two males in the area but could not determine if one had placed the call.
•July 26, 7:12 p.m., a leather jacket was found at a Main Street property in the centre of town. The jacket had been laying on their child’s trampoline for two days. The jacket is at the RCMP Detachment, where it is being held for 30 days to be claimed by the owner.
•July 27, 12:55 a.m., received a call via 911 of unwanted guests at the Comfort Inn on Starrs Road. Officers attended and located and arrested one person under the Protection of Property Act. The person, who was intoxicated, was lodged in a cell overnight.
•July 27, 2:57 a.m., request to assist the Yarmouth Fire Department at a suspicious fire at 180 Argyle Street. An arson investigation is underway.
•July 27, 4:56 a.m., officers received a call about a man laying down on the sidewalk at the intersection of Parade and Brunswick. Officers attended, no medical emergency. The person was very intoxicated and escorted to a cell.
•July 27, 9:40 p.m., received a 911 call from Argyle Street of shots heard near a gravel pit. Shots turned out to be fireworks.
•July 28, 9:18 a.m., received a call via 911 to assist the fire department regarding a gas tank that had dropped off of a vehicle and was spewing gasoline on the street.
•July 29, 1:38 p.m., report of a theft from an auto at the Yarmouth Mall parking lot. A camera had been stolen. The RCMP reminds the public not to leave expensive items in plain view.
•July 30, 7:54 a.m., received a call of a break and enter to a business overnight on Cliff Street. An undisclosed amount of cash and cigarettes were taken.
•July 30, 2:40 p.m., motor vehicle collision at Brunswick Street and King Street. No injury but considerable damage to vehicles. A drive charged for failing to yield at a stop sign.
•July 30, 10:17 p.m., report of a theft from a vehicle, which was parked at the Mariners Centre for the exhibition. A digital camera was stolen from an unlocked Ford Ranger truck.
•July 31, 10:28, 911 hang-up, officers responded to the address and determined that a 16-month old child was playing with the phone.
•Aug 1, report of a theft from a motor vehicle parked at the Mariners Centre for the exhibition. The contents of a wallet were stolen.
•Aug. 1, 8:07 p.m., a bicycle was found on Havelock Street, had been on the property for two days. Bicycle is a blue and white 12-speed and can be claimed at the town detachment.
•Aug 2, 12:13 p.m., report that overnight someone had damaged the radar screen of a boat at the Lobster Rock Wharf.
