Windsor Triathlon for kids set to go this weekend
Athletes between the ages of three and 19 and who like fitness, fun and fresh air, are invited to participate in Windsor’s fourth annual triathlon. This year’s event will take place at the new Hants Aquatic Centre and Victoria Park area, Sunday Aug. 17. The event is part of a nationwide series of Kid’s of Steel (KOS) triathlons to promote fitness and healthy living for children.
After four successful events, the organizing committee of Kevin Walsh, Roseanna Boyd, Heather Brown, and Jim Lambert are thrilled with the ever-growing popularity of the event. Last year, more than 100 participants enjoyed the course, which was the best-attended event in the province for the third year in a row.
This year’s race begins with swimming in the new outdoor pool, biking and running around town roads, marshalled by local volunteers.
The distances are modest and designed to let the children finish the race while having a positive experience. Distances vary based on age group and parental assistance is allowed for younger children.
The first 100 participants to sign up will receive an event T-shirt and medal, plus a goodie bag with various items from our sponsors.
This year, the T-shirts were paid for by local businesses, including Windsor Physiotherapy, Momentum Massage, Windsor Chiropractic Health Centre, Breakaway Cycling Promotions (Alan Mumford), and Dr. Kevin Walsh, Dentistry.
As well, the program received generous grants from the West Hants Community Health Board and the Nova Scotia Dental Association. As well there were assistance or donations from the following local businesses or organizations: Town of Windsor Recreation, Pharmasave, Farmers, Subway, Oulton’s Meats, Brooklyn & Coastal Insurance, Sobeys, Atlantic Superstore, Porter’s Trophy and Custom Engraving, The Hants Journal, and McDonald’s. Events like this don’t happen without the help of many individuals and businesses – public support is appreciated. Special thanks to Town of Windsor and West Hants summer Recreation employees, and the Stetsons and Spurs for their time.
The cost for this year’s event is $11 per person and $6 for each additional child, which includes a $3 participant fee for mandatory Triathlon Nova Scotia insurance Application forms can be picked up at the town office.
