The Western Kings Arena Association is hosting a weekend of musical fundraisers August 9 and 10 as part of ongoing efforts to work its way to debt-free status.
The weekend kicks off with the “Raisin’ the Roof” concert, taking place from 7 p.m. to midnight Saturday. Musical entertainment includes Valley cover band Valliviller and classic rock and Beatles cover artists Hal Bruce and Spare Parts. The Grass, a southern rock band with roots in Halifax and Ottawa, will also entertain. The event is licenced and open to those over 19.
Sunday, the musical style shifts to bluegrass, with music getting underway at 2 p.m. and running until 6 p.m. with entertainment provided by Dave Burbine and Traditional Country, LeBlanc Family and Friends, Country Grass and Spur of the Moment with Shirley Olmstead. From 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., a pork barbecue with all the fixins’ will be served up by Jim Lamb and there will be activities for kids, with the return of wooden pig races and duck pond fun throughout the afternoon.
All proceeds from the two events, both of which take place at the arena, will help the arena management group continue to reduce its debt. Several years ago, the WKAA had to borrow $150,000 to carry out structural repairs to the arena. Since then, volunteers have hosted a variety of fundraisers to reduce the debt, which now sits at $57,000.
There will be lots of room on-site for free camper parking, but utility hookups are not available. For information, call 765-3225 or email bobbarb@eastlink.ca.
