It promises to be one of the biggest single events in Maritime pro wrestling this year, as MainStream Wrestling Entertainment (MSW) returns to Digby as an official part of the Scallop Days festival.
The ring will be set up outdoors on the waterfront, at the marina, on Saturday evening, Aug. 9. MSW owner and promoter Devin Chittick, a.k.a. five-time Atlantic Canadian Champion “X-Ray” Kyle Kruze, originally from Digby, says he will be defending his title in the main event, the “Steel Cage Scallop Days Showdown.” The challenger will be “Kowboy” Mike Hughes, a long-time Maritime main-eventer, a national TV star on The Fight Network and a former WWE performer.
“I am a little worried about this encounter though, as Mike outweighs me by 100 pounds and he has the reputation for being one of the meanest, roughest players in the game and I surely have my work cut out for me,” Chittick said. “This is the biggest match of my life and I am doing everything I can to prepare myself mentally as well as physically.”
He said it would be a struggle but he believes that with the support of his fans in Digby he can overcome the situation and no matter how beaten and broken he might be when the final bell rings, he is determined to walk out of the steel cage as the champion.
“I’ve never been more excited to perform live, especially in Digby – my favourite place to wrestle for,” Chittick said. “I’m one of their own and I’m asking everyone reading this to please come out and attend this spectacular event. I need all of you to rally behind me now more than ever before.”
There is talk in the MSW office that a tag-team match could be included on the card and we could see the first ever “Man Overboard” match where the only way to win would be to throw your opponent into the harbour.
“Iron Tiger” Mike Fraser and Johnny “Scotia” Soul will bring their infamous feud to Digby for the first time. Other Maritime wrestling stars expected to compete include “Lumber” Jack Johnson, “Hard-Nosed” Haggerty, Killer Bee, Novacane and more. “Captain” Kirk will be the ring announcer.
Chittick said a handful of the new, rising stars to be showcased are under the tutelage of “Wildman” Gary Williams, one of the top independent pro wrestling stars in Canada and a national TV star on The Fight Network. Chittick said the youngsters bring excitement to the company, as they are new, hungry and are eager to compete. They try twice as hard to prove themselves to the rest of the crew and the fans, so they represent something to look forward to.
The show gets underway at 7 p.m. Advance tickets are available at the sponsor location, Subway in Digby. Chittick said he has always enjoyed wrestling outdoors in front of large crowds and when you have an opportunity to showcase such as intense product to a different audience, it’s always positive. When MSW performed during Scallop Days four years ago outside in the Canadian Tire parking lot, over 1,000 people were in attendance and the promotion gained several new fans that day.
