Balser misses cut at Canadian championship
Locke readying for national junior boys' tournament
Digby’s Anne Balser was among 58 players to miss the cut at the Royale Cup Canadian Women’s Amateur championship that wrapped up Friday at Elmhurst Golf and Country Club in Winnipeg, Man.
The championship was won by Stacey Keating of Victoria, Australia, who finished with a four-day total score of 285 to defeat defending champion and national amateur team member Stephanie Sherlock of Barrie, Ont., by three strokes.
Seventy-three players qualified to play the final two rounds, including Balser’s Nova Scotia teammates. Laura Harris of New Minas finished 35th, while Mireille LeBlanc of Meteghan River was just behind in 36th place. The team’s youngster, Irene Jung of Bedford, wound up in 53rd place.
The inter-provincial team play part of the tournament was won by Ontario.
Another Digby golfer is about to take part in a national championship. Eric Locke, winner of the Nova Scotia junior boys championship, was on the Digby Pines course today getting in final preparation for the Canadian Junior Boys championship Aug. 4–8 at Edmonton Petroleum Golf and Country Club.
Locke is scheduled to depart Sunday for Edmonton.
