The Bricklayer returns at Brickton Clay Day
Community celebration set for August 2
On August 2 at 2 p.m. there is going to be another Clay Day at Brickton. This is a time where you will be able to learn more about the days when Brickton was a thriving community with a brick factory, post office, general store, produce warehouse, train stop, blacksmith shop -- and the list goes on.

In an attempt to reacquaint people with some of the events of that time (about 1900 and on) several photos and artifacts from that time will be available on display.

Actual Brickton clay will be used to make clay creations and judging will be by the People’s Choice. If you don’t wish to play in the red clay, then a substitute, non-messy clay will be available.

The day will start off at Brickton Community Hall at 2 p.m. with opening remarks by Councilor Phil Milo. The clay competition will start about 2:15 and a pie-eating contest will be at about 3 p.m. followed by a seed spitting contest.

Hopefully we will have a brick laying demonstration sometime throughout the afternoon.

All through the afternoon there will be ongoing events of face painting, games to test your skills, live music and of course the displays.

Have you ever wondered what you might look like in clothes from 100 years ago? Well, here’s your chance. We will have a selection of garments for you to don when we take your photo (for a small fee, of course).

Garnet Banks (3 Old Friends), Valley Blue, and other local musicians will be on hand to provide some toe-tapping old time music throughout the afternoon.

If you get thirsty, no problem as there will be pop, lemonade and ice tea for sale.

If possible (but not mandatory) you are encouraged to bring your lawn chair. You will probably want to sit down as you listen to the music or just take it easy.

Organizers have it on good authority that George, the bricklayer will be on hand to regale you of his tale of woe when laying bricks.

All of these events will take place outside unless participants are forced to go inside because of the weather.

As the afternoon draws to a close, those attending are encouraged to come to the Cold Plate Supper in the hall at 4:30 p.m. It’s only $8 and the proceeds will go toward the purchase of a “greener” heating and cooling system.

I attended the first Clay Day event(10 or 12 years ago) and had a wonderful time. My son moulded a VW car. That event was headed by a Mrs. Piper I believe, and she was very enthusiastic. I would like to know if there are any photos still available to view of the first annual event, I have since found out that I had a family member at the event, who has since passed. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
