A Shelburne Municipal councilor has been charged with dangerous driving and fleeing from police after a short pursuit on the Highway 103 near Chester.
Raymond Davis, 50, refused to pull over when signaled to by a RCMP cruiser.

“His vehicle was on a lookout after we were notified the driver may have health concerns and shortly after that one of our members spotted his vehicle,” said Cpl. Derek Smith of the RCMP Lunenburg District Chester office.

The member turned on his lights and sirens and tried to intercept the vehicle but his attempts were ignored.

“He became extremely concerned with the safety of the public,” said Cpl. Smith.

The officer then pulled up beside Davis’ vehicle and forced it off the road and onto the shoulder.

Again Davis attempted to drive away but the officer bumped his cruiser into the vehicle and off into a ditch.

“Our member then ran up to the car and arrested him,” said Cpl. Smith.

He was later charged and brought to court the next day where he was remanded to the East Coast Forensic Hospital, a secure mental facility in Dartmouth.

He will appear in Bridgewater Court on Aug 20.

Warden, Sherman Embree of the Municipality of Shelburne said that the procedures of council would not be affected in the short term.

“It is unfortunate the situation that has arisen,” said Embree. “Our hopes and prayers is on his safety and that he is getting the care he needs.”
