Assault results in CSO

The court imposed a conditional sentence order (CSO) on a Kentville man for an assault conviction.

In Kentville provincial court July 16, Judge Alan Tufts imposed a three-month conditional sentence on Vanio Nathaniel Beals, 28, for assault causing bodily harm.

The sentence is in the form of a curfew, and will be followed by nine months’ reporting probation.

Probation conditions include Beals taking any recommended assessment, counselling or treatment; and his refraining from possessing or consuming alcoholic beverages.

Beals committed the assault in Kentville May 6, 2007, and pleaded guilty to the charge May 14, 2008.

Granted conditional discharge

Judge James Burrill granted Coldbrook resident Colin Douglas Palmer, 21, a conditional discharge July 15 on a charge of assault with a weapon.

The discharge is pending a 12-month probation term, during which time Palmer must conduct 50 hours of community service. He must also pay a victim surcharge of $50.

The charge stemmed from an incident in Kentville Dec. 15. The judge found Palmer guilty of the charge July 15.

Judge Tufts granted a conditional discharge July 16 to Kentville resident Nicholas Jonathan Caldwell, 19, on a charge of resisting a police officer in the execution of duties.

The discharge is pending nine months’ reporting probation, performance of 80 hours’ community service work and a $300 charitable donation to the Red Door.

Probation conditions also include Caldwell taking any recommended assessment, counselling or treatment; and refraining from possessing or consuming alcoholic beverages or non-medically prescribed drugs.

Dartmouth resident Blair Christopher Kane, 19, received a conditional discharge from Judge Tufts July 17 on a charge of possession of property valued at less than $5,000 and known to have been unlawfully obtained.

The discharge is pending 12 months’ reporting probation and a $500 charitable donation to the Addiction Services/Crosbie house.

Other probation conditions include Kane taking any assessment, counselling or treatment; refraining from contacting a specific person; and refraining from possessing or consuming non-medically prescribed drugs.

The charge resulted from an incident in Kings County Oct. 13, 2007. The court found Kane guilty of the charge May 21.
