Liverpool grads start a new chapter in life

Proud parents, beaming graduates and scholarship awards were in great supply for Liverpool Regional High School’s graduation ceremony.

The theme for the June 26 ceremony was all about memories, and guest speaker Leo Campbell had many to share. Specific memories of students were told, including several in-jokes that had the graduates cracking up and leaving parents a little bewildered.

Campbell said, elementary, junior high and senior high are all chapters in your life and now it was time to start another.

“When you go on and write more chapters, your teachers will still be there. Remember them,” he added.

Valedictorian Daniel Evans received great cheers when he took the stage. Evans said, homework and classes wouldn’t be what you remember. It will be the stories that you would continue to share as you went on.

Afterwards a video was shown, where students shared there most memorable moments for the camera.

The last speaker was Principal Terry Doucette.

“For the last three years, you have heard me speak about respect. Tonight it is pride.”

And there was much to be proud about.

A third of the graduating class received honours distinction.

Guests, including local MLA Vicki Conrad, awarded $252,654 in scholarships. 22 $1,000 scholarships were awarded that came directly from the scholarship auction.

At the end of the awards, Erin Steward was presented with both the Queen Elizabeth Medal and the Governor General’s Award. These awards recognize academic excellence for all three years of senior high.

A reception in the cafeteria followed, where many hugs and a few tears were shared. Students then boarded buses and headed off for a full night with Safe Grad to add just a few more memories.
