MOTEL UNITS DAMAGED BY FIRE

A two alarm page for a fire at the rear of the former Honey Hill Motel in Dayton kept firefighters at the scene for more than 4 hours last Wednesday night. The first page sounded at 8:52 pm and first arrival, Deputy Chief John Wainwright reported smoke showing and a working fire. He immediately requested a second alarm and the Port Maitland tanker to respond.

Several 1 ∏” hose lines were advanced with backup water from two YFD tankers and one from Port Maitland. Fire was mainly contained to the center of the 12 units although heat and heavy smoke caused damage to the adjacent living quarters.

There were no injuries as the occupants had all safely exited. An investigation by Fire Officials and RCMP took place after the knockdown.

FUN DAY SUCCESSFUL

The first annual Open House and Fun Day hosted by the YFD Auxiliary was a great success. The turnout of adults and children made the cool day a lot of fun and a successful fund raiser for the Auxiliary.

The dunk tank with John Levac, Phil Mooney and Jim McRae Jr. the targets for the day kept many busy trying to get them into the water.

The yard sale, sucker pull and other assorted games were active throughout the day. The winner of the treasure chest was Corey Vail. Keesha Fiander who guessed 143 jelly beans in a jar was the winner, 150 being the exact number. The treasure chest included the autographed hockey stick and $300.00 worth of gravel. $150.00 worth of gravel was won by Robert Thibeau and a $110.00 motor bike helmet went to Kim Pitman. President Wendy and the Auxiliary membership would like to thank those who donated prizes and everyone who turned out to make the first one fun and successful.

HAZMAT RESPONSE

On Tuesday, June 3 at 9:26 am the YFD HazMat team and equipment were paged out to 74 Main Street to investigate an unknown spill in one of the apartments. This was discovered to be a non toxic powder which would not cause a breathing problem and was quickly cleaned up. Platoon Chief Hank Nickerson stated after that the safest way to prevent a serious happening was to alert the Fire Department allowing trained personnel to assess the problem.
