Canada Day festivities envelop Canning, starting with Kingsport Gala Days June 28 with community-wide yard sales at 10 a.m., street parade at 1:30 p.m., fireworks on the wharf at 10 p.m. and much more.

Ross Creek Centre for the Arts celebrates Canada’s birthday with a free family day beginning at 1 p.m. Food available all day, live music by Trillium and The Mud Creek Boys from 2-9:30, wagon rides from 2-4, art workshops, fish pond, kite-making and face-painting, lantern-making and lighting in the evening, and fireworks.

Celebrate Canada Day the Bay Day way. Activities begin at 10 a.m. with a dessert contest, street parade at 11, seafood and corn chowder or chili luncheon, hot dog, hamburger and sausage canteens. There’s an afternoon flea market, church auction, hayrides, dart booth, dunk tank, children’s games, 4-H presentation, 50/50 ticket sales and music by Bill Tupper and friends, chicken BBQ supper, evening variety show, Canada Day cake and fireworks at dusk

On June 20, Kings County Councillor Jim Taylor presented a grant cheque to Roleen Ogilvie, president of the Canning Fieldwood Heritage Society, located above the library. Funds are for projects, museum operating costs and to help with the lighthouse and Dickie-Baxter House.

“I would like to thank Jim and the other councilors for considering us so worthy,” Ogilvie said.

Slow start, but summer student Debbie Chute is optimistic that people will come to see all the museum has to offer.

Canning library offers free membership and opens Tuesday-Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Summer student Candice Davison is anxiously waiting for parents to register their youngsters for storytime, crafts and activities offered free from July 8 to Aug. 14. Contact 582-7699 to register.

The Apple Tree Landing Family Education Centre hosted a yard sale, BBQ and face-painting June 21 with proceeds for children’s programs.

“This was our first yard sale and BBQ and will probably be an annual,” said Melanie Smiley, director of children’s programs.

Donations came from staff and parents, from Gerry Frail’s Nursery in Centreville and from the newly established K-Rock 89.3 radio station. Parent volunteer Jody Eye was also recognized for her tremendous efforts.

Kings Early Years Screening for School (KEYSS) is a project offered by the Annapolis Valley Regional School Board in partnership with Valley Child Development Association and supported by the Kings County Children's Foundation that will ease the transition between home and school for both parent and child and build relationships between schools, families and community agencies.

KEYSS is registering children for its free fall clinics now that start the end of September and run until November. If you have a three-year-old child starting school in September 2010 contact Mary Cunningham, project coordinator, at 678-0097.

The Cambridge (Ontario) Kiwanis Boys' Choir and Young Men's Chorus presents a “Tribute to God and Country” at the Pereaux Baptist Church July 3 at 7:30 p.m. Freewill offering.

Fieldwood Heritage Society invites everyone to bring a chair July 6 from 2-4 p.m. for a Main Street celebration near E. L. Newcomb Chinaware in honour of the anniversary of Lois Newcomb’s 70 years in business. Fun, live music and refreshments for all.

Daily Vacation Bible School is free for kids 4-12 with games, music, crafts and snacks at the Canning Baptist Church July 7-11 from 9 a.m.to noon. Call 582-3227 to register.

Strawberry and turkey salad supper will be held at the Pereaux Baptist Church July 10 from 4:30-7 p.m. Adults $9 and children 10-and-under $4. Take-out and picnic area available.

Glooscap Elementary School: students not receiving their report cards June 27 can pick them up at the office July 2-6 from 8 a.m.-2 p.m.

Pewter keepsake ornaments featuring the Glooscap logo are $5 each at the office.

Northeast Kings Education Centre: Principal Everett MacPherson has accepted a position with the AVRSB and Vice Principal Kevin Veinot will become the new principal as of Aug. 1.
