Gates Lab offering courses in Yarmouth for July
The Gates Computer Lab at the Izaak Walton Killam Memorial Library in Yarmouth has computer courses in July including a series of introductory courses on handheld global positioning systems. Listed below are the courses being offered beginning Tuesday, July 15:



Computer Basics

Tuesday, July 15, 2 to 4 p.m.

This two-hour course is about the basics of computers such as using the mouse and keyboard, opening and closing programs and multi-tasking.

GPS: Amazing Race!

Wednesday, July 16, 2 to 4 p.m.

This two-hour session introduces participants to a handheld global positioning system (GPS), as well as gives an opportunity to participate in an amazing race … Geocaching style! This program is designed for teens between the ages of 13-16.



Internet Basics

Thursday, July 17, 2 to 4 p.m.

An introductory course to the Internet (World Wide Web): come in and learn how to “surf the Net.” Topics include navigating the Internet, an introduction to the Western Counties Regional Library Web site, and performing basic searches.

GPS: Treasure Hunt!

Tuesday, July 22, 2 to 4 p.m.

This program is a two-hour introduction into GPS handheld systems, and it gives an opportunity to participate in a treasure hunt … Geocaching style. This program is designed for youth between the ages of 9-12.



File Management Basics

Wednesday, July 23, 2 to 4 p.m.

This is a two-hour session about the basics of file management. Topics covered will include how to create and save files, how to locate lost files, creating folders, moving files and folders and deleting files.

Introduction to GPS

Thursday, July 24, 2 to 4 p.m.

This two-hour session introduces participants to the GPS handheld system, as well as the outdoor sport known as geocaching. Time is spent split between inside instruction and outside hands-on use. (Proper footwear is recommended)



Introduction to Microsoft Word

Tuesday, July 29 and Thursday, July 31, 2 to 4 p.m.

This is a two-part introductory course to Microsoft Word. Come and learn the basics of word processing. Topics will include formatting text, adding borders, inserting pictures and clipart, and more.

Purchasing a Computer

Wednesday, July 30, 2 to 4 p.m.

Are you looking to buy a computer and want some key advice? This two-hour session will introduce you to the components of a computer and will provide you with advice to help you find the system that suits your needs.
