Canada Day is an undeniably busy time in Canning and surrounding areas. Starting with Kingsport Gala Days Sat., June 28, a full day of events has been planned ranging from the community-wide yard sales beginning at 10 a.m. to a street parade at 1:30 p.m. to the fireworks on the wharf at 10 p.m.

For another fun-filled day of activities, Ross Creek Centre for the Arts will celebrate Canada’s birthday with a free family day beginning at 1 p.m. Food will be available all day. Trillium and The Mud Creek Boys will provide live music from 2-9:30 p.m., wagon rides from 2-4, art workshops, fish pond, kite-making and face-painting, lantern-making and lighting in the evening, and fireworks.

Why stop there? For the past 25 years Scott’s Bay has been providing a fun-filled day of Bay Day/Canada Day activities that begin at 10 a.m. with a dessert contest and parade entrant judging, street parade at 11, seafood and corn chowder or chili luncheon, hot dog, hamburger and sausage canteens.

Afternoon activities include hayrides, a dart booth, dunk tank, children’s games, 4-H presentation, 50/50 ticket sales and musical entertainment by Bill Tupper and friends, a chicken BBQ supper, an evening variety show, then Canada Day cake and fireworks at dusk

Kings Early Years Screening for School (KEYSS) project held its successful pilot last year that involved eight schools and is offering the same for this fall. The aim is to ease the transition between home and school for both parent and child and to build relationships between schools, families and community agencies. The project is offered by the Annapolis Valley Regional School Board in partnership with Valley Child Development Association and supported by the Kings County Children's Foundation.

KEYSS is registering children for its free fall clinics now that start the end of September and run until November. If you have a three-year-old child starting school in September 2010, contact Mary Cunningham, project coordinator, at 678-0097 to take advantage of this fantastic opportunity to prepare your child for school.

The Cambridge (Ontario) Kiwanis Boys' Choir and Young Men's Chorus will present a “Tribute to God and Country” during a concert at the Pereaux Baptist Church Thurs., July 3 at 7:30 p/m. Freewill offering.

Fieldwood Heritage Society is organizing a party Sun., July 6 from 2-4 p.m. on Main St in Canning, near E. L. Newcomb Chinaware. The party is in honour of the anniversary of Lois Newcomb’s 70 years in business on Main St.

There will be fun, live music and refreshments for all. Bring a chair and help us celebrate with Lois.

Daily Vacation Bible School for kids 4-12 years old will be held at the Canning Baptist Church the week of July 7-11 from 9 a.m. to noon. The theme, group’s power lab discovering Jesus’s miraculous power, will be held with games, music, crafts and snacks. There is no cost, so register early by contacting the church at 582-3227.

A strawberry and turkey salad supper will be held at the Pereaux Baptist Church Thurs., July 10 from 4:30-7 p.m. Adults $9 each and children 10-years-and-under $4. Take out and picnic area available.

Glooscap Elementary School: the resource staff is looking for donations of board games and other educational toys or gadgets that your child may have outgrown.

A limited number of well-crafted pewter ornaments featuring the Glooscap logo, created by former student Michelle Trenholm, are available for $5 from the school office. These ornaments would make a great keepsake for any child.

On June 27, the last day of school, a closing assembly will be held at 9:30 a.m. The Grade 5 students will be recognized as they walk across the stage to receive a leaving certificate. The whole student body and staff will join them in the celebration as well as any family member that would like to attend.

Dismissal will be at 11:05 a.m. All students will receive a report card on that day, or can be picked up from July 2-6 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. or with a written request June 27.

Northeast Kings Education Centre: Graduation Reception will be held in the evening Thurs., June 26 with parents of Grade 11 students hosting the event.

Refreshments of punch, sandwiches, sweets and vegetable and fruit trays will be available.

Distribution of report cards will be only during closings: Grade 8 and 12 Thurs., June 26, and all Grades 6 and 7 and 10 and 11 Fri., June 27.

Buses will leave the school at 12:15 p.m. June 27.

NKEC Principal Everett MacPherson will be stepping down after accepting a new position with the Annapolis Valley Regional School Board effective Aug. 1, 2008. MacPherson said he thoroughly enjoyed working with the children and the community at large over the past four years.

Congratulations go out to Vice Principal Kevin Veinot, who has been appointed to the position of Principal at NKEC effective Aug. 1, 2008.

Sunday Flea Markets at the Canning Lions Hall have been postponed for the summer and will return in the fall.

The Cornwallis District New Horizon Seniors have also closed for the summer and will return Sept. 10. For the final meeting, 33 seniors finished their weekly sessions with a dinner at Mom’s restaurant in Canning.

A blood collection clinic takes place at the Canning Pharmasave Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8-10 a.m. at a cost of $6. A free monthly cholesterol and blood pressure clinic is also available. Seniors’ day is the last Thursday of the month.

Two Planks and a Passion Theatre will present two outdoor productions of Thornton Wilder’s classic Our Town opening July 2 as well as the premiere of Jerome: The Historical Spectacle by Ami McKay, the bestselling author of The Birth House that opens Aug. 2.

Ross Creek Centre for the Arts: Opening July 1, the gallery will feature works by artist Barbara Hill-Taylor. Taylor will exhibit her three-dimensional multi-layered quilts depicting beautiful landscapes. You can also view her work at Dalnews.dal.ca.
