Complaining about the selection of movies at the local theatre is a Yarmouth pastime. But there might finally be some relief in sight for local film buffs.
Representatives from Film Circuit, a division of the Toronto International Film Festival, will be in Yarmouth on Tuesday to discuss the possibility of establishing a monthly or twice monthly program for screening independent films from Canada and around the globe right here in Yarmouth.
The meeting is at 3 p.m. in the community room of the Yarmouth Branch of Art Gallery Nova Scotia on Main Street and is open to anyone.
Film Circuit already provides filmgoers in 166 under-served communities across Canada access to films they would not otherwise have the chance to see in their local theatres. Such groups rent space at local movie theatres once or twice a month at cost and sell tickets for the films. Each group is run by local volunteers.
Money from ticket sales goes towards renting the movie theatre, paying film distributors for the rights to screen films and to the local group for things such as advertising and the running of the program.
Cindy Morris of Film Circuit, who will be at the meeting on Tuesday, said the programming of each area is dictated by what local volunteers believe would work for their respective areas.
