It was clearly evident that PWES was in Spring Fling mode Fri., June 6 all over the school, inside and out. Parents, kids, lots of PWES alumni and community members found lots of old favourites: the outdoor BBQ, the silent auction, face-painting, hair-braiding, sucker pull, cakewalk, ticket auction, and used books.

There was always a line-up for the new Kool Kat Bouncer (which was large and long and snaked from the back bottom corner of the gym through the middle until almost the other end). There was the change to play air hockey and basketball arcade games and do karaoke.

The ever-popular and delicious cakewalk was joined by a chip walk this year. The great weather had everyone eating outside at the tables and kids enjoying on the playground.

This year’s teacher activity to close the Spring Fling was a three period ringette game. Period one being played by a six-member P-1 squad; period two by students from Grades 2-3; and the final period by the 4-5s.

The staff team was captained by Mrs. Newton and included players like Muttart the Maniac, Sure Shot Dauphinee and Miss Stanley Cup Woodford. The able and amusing commentary by Mrs. Karen Williams added to the enjoyment of the event.

The P-1 students outscored the staff 3-2 during the first period, the 2-3s were ahead 1-0 at the end of their period and the teachers came back in the third period to manage a 1-1 tie with the 4-5s.

The winner of the Disney basket was Roslyn Morrison, and Elijah Sweet won the Scooter/Helmet/Shin pads package.

Local historian and businessman Ken Bezanson spoke at the Port Williams Seniors’ last meeting of the season. He spoke on the history of our village, founded in 1856, and showed pictures back to the time when shipping was a thriving business.

Ken takes pride in the village and we can always depend on him for his knowledge and special effects. Ken’s mother Hilda, in her 96th year, enjoys showing her pictures and talks about yesteryear. Their home is full of love for their friends and neighbours.
