Horton High School recognized a combination of athletic ability and versatility as it handed out its athletic awards for the 2007-2008 school year.

Lindsay Harris was the Senior Female Athlete of the year and Matt Jenner was named the Senior Male Athlete in a close decision over Robert Newcombe. The Junior Varsity Athletes of the Year were Grade 10 students Kira Pederson and Ian Roberts.

Harris, last year’s top junior female athlete, ran cross-country and played golf (where she was a provincial champion), softball and badminton as well as D-1 girls’ basketball during 2007-2008. She was MVP for girls’ basketball and co-MVP for girls’ golf.

Jenner excelled in soccer and hockey as well as playing table tennis and competing in track and field. He was MVP for D-1 boys’ soccer and boys’ hockey, and was also Horton’s male nominee for the NSSAF provincial Ambassador of School Sport citation.

Pederson played D-1 basketball and softball and did track and field. She was intermediate girls’ MVP in track and field, where she qualified for provincials, and Rookie of the Year for D-1 girls’ basketball, where she also competed at provincials.

Roberts was a member of the senor mixed curling team that qualified for provincials, and also played volleyball and badminton. He was MVP for JV boys’ volleyball and won fair play and dedication awards for both curling and badminton.

Special awards

Horton has a number of special athletic awards, many of which are memorials to former students at the school. The Brian Hatt Memorial trophy for fair play and dedication in senior boys’ soccer was won by Robert Newcombe.

The Jordan Trophy for the boys’ hockey MVP went to Jenner. The Bezanson Trophy for sportsmanship and fair play in boys’ hockey went to Max Wood, and the Jason Allen Memorial Trophy for the top hockey defenseman went to Robert Newcombe.

As well, a new trophy this year was presented in memory of Bill Cleveland, a 2007 Horton graduate who died tragically last summer. The first recipient of the award, for fair play and dedication in track and field, was Danica Patrick, a friend of Cleveland’s.

Athletic director Jennifer Pineo recognized the school’s many district, regional and provincial champion teams and individuals, as well as listing the Horton students who earned provincial or national recognition through extracurricular activities.

The Student Council Team of the Year was the D-1 boys’ basketball team, which not only won provincials for a second straight year, but did it on their home court. The Griffins went 41-0 this season and are currently riding a 64-game winning streak.
