The Kaleigh French Reaching Out Globally (KFROG) organization hosted a fun-filled day of charity events at the Look Off Sun., June 8.
Events included a memorial service, a 5km and 10km walk/run, a pancake breakfast, craft booths, family activities, Chinese auction, BBQ, beer tent and live entertainment. When all was said and done, the day was a huge success, raising over $13,000 for local youth who volunteer for global missions.
The French family would like to give a huge thank-you to all who came out in support of the event and to those who donated their time and prizes.

The Apple Tree Landing Family Education Centre on J. Jordan Road in Canning will host a plant and yard sale and hot dog BBQ with pop Sat., June 21 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Face painting will also be available. All proceeds to children’s programs at the centre.

The bookmobile returns to the Canning Lions Hall Tues., June 24 from 7-8 p.m.
Fieldwood Heritage Society is organizing a party Sun., July 6 from 2-4 p.m. on Main St. in Canning, near E. L. Newcomb Chinaware. The party is in honour of the anniversary of Lois Newcomb’s 70 years in business on Main St.
There will be fun, live music and refreshments for all. Bring a chair and help us celebrate with Lois.
Glooscap Elementary School: June is a busy month as the school year draws to a close. On Tues., June 17 at 6:30 p.m., an information meeting for parents/guardians will be held at NKEC for students entering Grade 6; on Wed., June 18 there will be a Grade 5 celebration with a luncheon for students and staff in the multipurpose room. Field Day is on the 20th and a talent show will be held on the 23rd.
Update: Jump Rope for Heart raised an amazing total of $6,105. A special thanks goes out to Mr. Hind, who led in fun skipping tricks and challenges.
Library: The grocery tape prizewinner is Oliver McMahon in Mrs. Champion’s class. Please continue to save your Sobey’s and Canning ValuFoods receipts over the summer months.
Special offer: a limited number of well-crafted pewter ornaments featuring the Glooscap logo that were created by former student Michelle Trenholm is available for $5 from the school office. This ornament would make a great keepsake for a child finishing Grade 5 or as a special birthday gift.
Northeast Kings Education Centre: Parent orientation for next year’s Grade 6 students will be held Tues., June 17 from 6:30–8 p.m.
Dinner Theatre: all grads wishing to attend the dinner theatre in Halifax Thurs., June 19 need to pay $42 to Mr. Sanford ASAP. Buses leave NKEC at 4:30 p.m. and return at 11:30 p.m. Seating is limited.
Approximately 75 students participated at the eighth annual Heritage Fair in May. Three students received recognition. Celie Frank Rogers with her entry “Finding the Forgotten” will represent NKEC at the National Heritage Fair in Victoria, BC from July 4-14, and Grade 9 student Michelle Trenholm with her entry “Wayne Gretzky” is the second alternate. Grade 9 student Ellish Elliott’s entry “Peacekeeping” received honourable mention.
NKEC Lieutenant Governor Medal Recipients: Annie MacDuff and Logan VanBlarcom each received the 2008 Lieutenant Governor medals. The Lieutenant Governor medals are awarded to one female and male Grade 11 student who have demonstrated leadership qualities and service in the school and community and commendable performance in the courses in which they are enrolled. Medals were presented at a ceremony at the Bridgetown Regional High School along with other AVRSB recipients. Congratulations, students!

Book Return: all text and library books must be returned to subject teachers prior to exams or during exam week or payment of books will be expected. Participation in school activities, including graduation events, will not be permitted on unpaid books.

Sunday Flea Markets at the Canning Lions Hall: The hall is open to sellers from 6-8 a.m. and buyers from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tables are $5 each and a canteen is available. Contact Don at 678-5525 for details.
A blood collection clinic takes place at the Canning Pharmasave Tuesday and Thursdays from 8-10 a.m. at a cost of $6. A free monthly cholesterol and blood pressure clinic is also available. Seniors’ day is the last Thursday of the month.
The Cornwallis District New Horizon Seniors’ Group meets each Wednesday from 1:30-4 p.m. at the Lions Hall in Canning. Seniors age 55 and up enjoy an afternoon with a brief business meeting then games like cards, crib and crokinole followed by a light lunch and an occasional day trip. New members welcome. Annual fee only $5.
Ross Creek Centre for the Arts: Gallery features works by artist Tony Myers’ Journey to the Border. His work is drawn from the traditions of Western relief printmaking.
