Man rescued by 413 Squadron off of Sable Island
Search and Rescue Technicians (SAR-Techs) from 14 Wing Greenwood successfully rescued an injured man off a container ship approximately 400 kilometers East of Sable island Monday, June 9.
413 Transport and Rescue Squadron were tasked by the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC) in Halifax at 8:45 a.m. to medevac a male from a container ship (the Maersk Dunedin) with a back injury.
The container ship had taken the man off of a sailboat, the Motus (which was participating in a Trans-Atlantic race) previously and was planning on steaming for Halifax, where the man would then be transferred to the hospital.
A CH-149 Cormorant arrived on scene and hoisted down three SAR-Techs to treat the man and assess his condition. It was determined by a doctor in Halifax that the man should not be moved and should remain on the container ship.
The air assets from the Wing (which also included a C-130 Hercules aircraft) started to return to their base when they were dispatched once again by the JRCC to medevac the man from the Maersk Dunedin as his condition had worsened. The man was then hoisted aboard the helicopter and flown to Windsor Park in Halifax, where he was subsequently transferred to a hospital for treatment.
"This mission is indicative of the capability and dedication that SAR squadrons across Canada can provide at a moment's notice." These things we do "that others may live," stated Warrant Officer Keith Mitchell, who is a senior SAR-Tech with 413 Squadron.
