Gas spill closes road over weekend
A Wedgeport resident received more than he bargained for when between 380 and 400 liters of gas poured out of the pump while he was filling his van at Petro Canada on the Haley Road late Friday night.A swivel valve connecting the hose to the pump broke and gas poured out onto the pavement and began flowing towards the ditch towards Enterprise Rent-a-Car.
Department of Environment inspector specialist Jason Catoul says they were notified of the spill around midnight Friday.
“The (Yarmouth) fire department responded quickly with their HazMat unit and it appeared visually that they contained most of the gas,” said Catoul.
Around 12:30 a.m. Robicheau’s Pumping Service arrived and began pumping the mixture of water and gas from the ditch.
The Haley Road was closed until late Saturday morning while cleanup took place.
The service station reopened Sunday after their service tech replaced all of the hoses at the station.
