Greenwich Fire Department prepares to celebrate 75th

The Greenwich Volunteer Fire Department will mark its 75th anniversary in style this coming weekend with a truck parade, open house and show-and-shine.

Chief Randy Schofield says fire trucks will line up for the parade outside Acadia University in Wolfville at around 10:30 a.m. Saturday morning, June 14. The parade itself is scheduled to begin at noon and will run to the Greenwich Fire Hall.

The fire hall will be a beehive of activity, as well, with an open house, barbecue and show-and-shine planned.

In other local fire news, Schofield said Greenwich firefighters were called to a motor vehicle incident in Greenwich that turned out to be a non-event Wednesday, June 4.

The Greenwich department was also called to the scene of a brush fire Thursday night, June 5 that turned out to be a controlled burn.

Canning Deputy Fire Chief Scott Cruickshank said his department responded to a render assistance call on Main Street, Canning, Tuesday evening, June 3. A vehicle with an individual inside went over an embankment. Cruickshank said there were no injuries but firefighters had to stabilize the vehicle and free the individual.

Wolfville Fire Chief Tim MacLeod said his department responded to a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of Highway 1 and Grand Pre Road in Grand Pre June 5. MacLeod said there were no injuries involved but firefighters had to clean up a minor fluid spill.

Kentville Fire Chief Shawn Ripley said Friday, June 6, that his department had responded to three minor grass and brush related fire calls in as many days. The fires occurred in north Kentville, Centreville and on Chester Avenue, Kentville.

Kentville firefighters responded to two calls for medical assistance during the Apple Blossom Festival parades Saturday, May 31, one during the children’s parade in the morning and one during the Grand Street Parade in the afternoon.

Ripley said Kentville responded to a total of 44 calls in the month of May, an average of about a call and a half a day.

New Minas Fire Chief James Redmond said his department responded to a couple minor alarms last week, but nothing of any major significance.
