YARMOUTH COUNTY APARTMENT FIRE LEAVES A DOZEN HOMELESS
At least 12 people are temporarily homeless after a
fire late Wednesday in a 12-unit apartment building north of Yarmouth, in Dayton.
Disaster volunteers from the Canadian Red Cross have arranged temporary
hotel accommodation and meals for at least one tenant The Red Cross says
11 other tenants found places to stay with relatives or friends for now.
A more detailed assessment of their needs and possible further help from
the Red Cross will be made today (Thursday).
A spokesperson for the Yarmouth fire department says there was extensive
damage to the building, which is a former motel located along Highway 1
in Dayton, about 10 kilometres north of Yarmouth.
RCMP say the owner of the apartment was arrested for public intoxication, however further investigation concluded that the fire, which originated in the kitchen area, was accidental.
