A Lockeport man was taken to the hospital with serious injuries after his motorcycle collided with another car on June 2.
65-year old Alonzo (Lonnie) Townsend was driving his motorcycle on Monday morning when he collided with a car on the corner of Locke Street and Brighton Road just outside the Crescent Beach Centre in Lockeport.
He was transported to Roseway Hospital, where he was assessed and then brought to the QEII in Halifax.
The other driver, also a Lockeport resident, was brought to Roseway Hospital with minor injuries and then released the same day.
Townsend currently sits as councilor for the Town of Lockeport but has been the voice of the community through his various jobs at the Coast Guard and CKBW.
“We are looking forward to seeing him come home and in better health,” said Mayor of Lockeport, Darian Huskilson.
Town Clerk for Lockeport, Joyce Young said that she has heard that his condition is stabilizing and that the whole community is hoping to see him well.
“We are his second family here,” she said. “We love him and hope to see him home soon.”
The accident is still under investigation by South Shore Traffic Services.

Comment online since June 6th 2008I've commented on many media reports regarding motorcycle accidents and this one is no different. Every time some poor biker gets run-over by an inattentive driver, the media always reports it the same way: "Motorcycle Collides with Car". Regardless of whom was actually at fault, wording the description this way effectively places the blame on the rider every time. The way I have heard this particular accident, Lonnie wasn't in the wrong, and basically got run-down by an inattentive driver. But I wasn't there. Sure, there are bikers out there who make bad choices and get into accidents, but I think they are far outnumbered by the number of "Collisions" caused by car-drivers turning left. Please come up with a better way to report something like this that doesn't immediately criminalize the biker. Even "Collision between Car and Motorcycle" is better than that. From the number of accidents I've heard reported so far between motorcycles and cars, you'll get plenty of practice yet. Bikers, Be Extremely Cautious on the roads in '08 and Assume Nothing.
