Good show for Kings athletes at Western track and field competition

There were no regional banners for Kings County schools at the Western Region track and field championships May 29 and 30 in Bridgetown, but there were plenty of good performances -individually and team-wise.
Coldbrook and District School placed a strong second in junior girls, West Kings was second and Central Kings fifth in intermediate girls, and C.K. was fourth in senior girls.
On the boys’ side, Central Kings was a close second in intermediate boys and Horton was fourth in senior boys. Hebbville swept the junior regional banners, and Park View swept the intermediate and senior divisions.
Individually, Britany MacArthur had another outstanding meet, winning the intermediate girls’ 800, 1,500 and 3,000-metre races (as she had at districts) and breaking Jenna Martin’s regional record with a run of 2:23 in the 800.
Robyn McNeill of Central Kings was also a triple winner, capturing the senior girls’ 800, 1,500 and 3,000 metres.
In junior girls, Coldbrook dominated the sprints, with Kaissa Van Meekeren winning the 100 and 200 metres and Jessica Monette capturing the 400. Monette was third in the 200 and fourth in the 400, and Coldbrook also won the 4X100 and 4X400 relays.
Jillian Tetlow of NKEC won the junior girls’ discus and was third in the shot put, qualifying for provincials in both events.
Kelsey Schofield of KCA was second in the javelin. Jill Burton of Pine Ridge was second in the discus, with Rebecca Reid of Coldbrook third. Lauren Jodrey of Hantsport was second in the pole vault, and Regan Troop of EMS was third in the long jump.
Reid also qualified for provincials with a fourth place finish in the javelin, and Maddy Macdonald of EMS was fourth in the 800 metres.
In junior boys, Eric Rand of NKEC won the pole vault. Doug Keddy of Pine Ridge won the long jump and also qualified in the hurdles with a fourth-place finish.
Other qualifiers in junior boys included Christian Hill of Pine Ridge, third in the high jump; Andrew Chase of Pine Ridge, third in the triple jump; Drew Wannamaker of Coldbrook, fourth in the 100 metres; Norman Atwell of EMS, fourth in the shot put; and the EMS 4X100 relay team, which also placed fourth.
In intermediate girls, in addition to MacArthur’s three victories, Alana Fairfax of Central Kings won the 400 metres and was second in the 200. Hilary Rawding of West Kings was second (to MacArthur) in the 800, 1,500 and 3,000, and Sarah Thomas of West Kings was third in the 400, 800 and 1,500 and fourth in the 3,000.
West Kings was third in the 4X100 relay. Central Kings was second in the 4X400. Stacy Burgess of C.K. was second in the javelin, Rachael Blezy of West Kings was third in the high jump and Chantal Landry of C.K. was fourth in the 400 metres.
In intermediate boys, Matt Butt of Central Kings won the discus. Iain MacMillan of C.K. was second in the hurdles, Connor Simmons of C.K. was third in the high jump and long jump and fourth in the triple jump, and C.K. placed second in the 4X400 relay.
Central Kings also had a number of fourth place finishes – Alex McCarthy in the 800 and 3,000, Mitch Best in the 1,500 and Andrew Jennings-Lindsay in the javelin and shot put; all of which qualified them for provincials in those events.
Other qualifiers in intermediate boys included Alex Verge of West Kings, third in the 200 metres; and Richard Thomas of Horton, fourth in the 100.
In senior girls, in addition to McNeill’s three wins, Marissa Walter of C.K. won both the 100 and 200 metres.
Heidi Stirling of Horton also had a strong meet, winning the 400, placing third in the 100 and fourth in the 200 and helping her team to a second-place finish in the 4X400 relay.
Taya McGillivary of Port Williams and Kings-Edgehill won the shot put, was second in the 400 and third in the 800.
Rebecca D’Eon of NKEC was fourth in the shot put, Christine Manning of NKEC was fourth in the pole vault, and Katelyn Morse of West Kings was fourth in the long jump.
In senior boys, Horton was second in the 4X400 relay and third in the 4X100. Horton’s Greg Theriau was second in the hurdles and third in the long jump and triple jump, and Jeremy Dunn was second in the shot put and third in the javelin. Dustin Poirier of Central Kings was third in the javelin, and Jeremy Shepherd of C.K. was fifth in the discus.
All the top finishers from the regional competition move on to NSSAF provincials set for this Friday and Saturday, June 6 and 7, at Metropolitan Field in Sackville.
