Mariners qualify for provincial softball championships
The Lady Mariners slo-pitch softball team qualified today for the Division 3 provincial championships next weekend at Cape Breton Highlands Academy in Margaree Harbour.
Digby Regional High School finished in third place this afternoon at Bridgetown, edging past North Queens 13-12 in the bottom of the seventh inning.
“Our girls made too many errors, but they pulled it out in the end,” said coach Amanda Deane.
The regional tournament, which was to have been hosted by Digby, was moved to Bridgetown because there was only one field available here, according to a school official.
New Germany wound up on top today, with Bridgewater in second place.
The Saints from New Germany trounced Digby 11-1 this morning, and “they’re definitely the team to beat,” said Deane.
Bridgewater, which took advantage of a slow Digby start Friday, won that game 5-2.
Digby did have a blowout yesterday, dropping Annapolis West Educational Centre 19-6 in a game shortened to five innings.
