Glooscap Elementary School: During a special Volunteer Tea held recently at the school, volunteers who assist with the fluoride program, class trips, skate-tying, the breakfast program and much more were thanked for their efforts and kindness.

Principal Corena Burbidge said, “we are so dependent on volunteers and we really appreciate everything they do for us.”

Funds Needed: Please help support the Glooscap school breakfast program by donating today. Disadvantaged students benefit greatly from nutritional breakfasts provided by caring volunteers with the support from continued donations. If you would like to help the children by making a contribution, contact the school at 582-2010.

There will be an assembly Tues., June 10, and then on Friday the 13th there will be an early dismissal of 11:05 a.m. as well as a staff in-service afternoon.

Jump Rope for Heart will be held Fri., June 16 when students are invited to jump in support of the Heart and Stroke Fund. The event will take place in the front driveway at noon.

Northeast Kings Education Centre: A Home and School meeting will be held Tues., June 3 at 7 p.m. in the library, and the high school will be holding their semi-formal Wed., June 4 from 7:30-10:30 p.m.

The NKEC Improv Club will be featured entertainment during the annual meeting of the Nova Scotia School Board Association at the Old Orchard Inn Thurs., June 5.

Next year’s Grade 6 students will be able to visit the school for an orientation Wed., June 11. There will be no school for regular Grade 6 students on this day. Parent orientation for these students will be held June 17 from 6:30–8 p.m.

Antique autos: On Wed., June 4, the Down East Classic Car Club will tour Starr’s Point, move on to Wellington Dyke, Saxon Street and the Canning Abliteau, then out to Kingsport and a stop at the Pereaux Kwik-Way for your viewing pleasure.

The Apple Tree Landing Family Education Centre on J. Jordan Road in Canning will host a plant and yard sale and hot dog BBQ with pop Sat., June 21 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Face-painting will also be available. All proceeds to children’s programs at the centre. Saleable yard sale and plants donations will be welcomed and appreciated.

Canning Legion: The weekly Jam Sessions normally held at the Legion have been discontinued for the summer, but will resume in the fall. Contact 582-7246 for information.

Sunday Flea Markets at the Canning Lions Hall: The hall is open to sellers from 6-8 a.m. and buyers from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tables are $5 each and a canteen is available.

A blood collection clinic takes place at the Canning Pharmasave Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8-10 a.m. at a cost of $6. A free monthly cholesterol and blood pressure clinic is also available. Seniors day is the last Thursday of the month.

The Cornwallis District New Horizon Seniors’ Group meets each Wednesday from 1:30-4 p.m. at the Lions Hall in Canning. Seniors age 55 and up enjoy an afternoon with a brief business meeting, then games like cards, crib and crokinole followed by a light lunch and an occasional day trip. New members welcome. Annual fee only $5.

On Fri., May 23, June Granger, Marketing and Communications Director for the Ross Creek Centre for the Arts, said goodbye after announcing that she was off to pursue other career opportunities.

I truly enjoyed corresponding with her. Her winning smile, bubbly enthusiasm and her professionalism surely will be missed. I wish her all the best in her new endeavours.

Ross Creek Centre for the Arts: Gallery features works by artist Tony Myers’ “Journey to the Border”. His work is drawn from the traditions of Western relief printmaking. Summer Arts at Ross Creek: youth programs with arts, friends, and fun will be held for kids aged 5-13 years, as well as teen programs in academies in writing, art, theatre and film.

Junior Counsellor program applications are still being accepted for teens interested in writing, theatre and visual arts. Adult programs are also being held on Saturday afternoons with Poetry, with Governor General nominated poet Carole Langille, and another program in Puppetry with Mermaid and Ross Creek alumnus Alice Green who has been working with and teaching about puppets for nearly 20 years.
