Seven girls vying for new crown of Miss Weymouth Gala
Weymouth is helping mark its 225th birthday and Loyalist founding by hosting the first Miss Weymouth Gala 2008. For the first time in 25 years, a young lady from the Weymouth area will be crowned Miss Weymouth to represent her community and be its spokesperson.
To kick off the event, a gala tea was held May 24 at Sissiboo Landing where seven young ladies participating in the Miss Weymouth Gala were introduced.
“The gala tea was a great success and Michelle Marr did a wonderful job decorating for the occasion,” said Leanne Murphy, a gala organizer. “There was a lot of support from the community and it gave them the chance to meet the girls running for Miss Weymouth.”
Leanne Murphy, Becky Barr and Rosanna Manzer took on the responsibility of organizing the gala for the Weymouth July 1st Committee.
The Miss Weymouth Gala was created to not only help celebrate Weymouth’s birthday but to encourage, develop and mature young ladies involved in this event so that they could successfully represent their community, said Murphy.
Jamie Belliveau, Sabrina Hill, Stephanie Deveau, Paige Manzer, Sara LeBlanc, Kaitlin Saulnier and Chelsea Thibault are participating in the Gala and are students at Saint Mary’s Bay Academy.
“To be part of the Miss Weymouth Gala is a unique opportunity for all seven of us,” said Jamie Belliveau. “It will be an experience that we will not forget.”
One of these seven girls vying for the new crown will be chosen Miss Weymouth 2008 Saturday during the Miss Weymouth Gala at St. Mary’s Bay Academy, beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the school’s gym.
Among duties as Miss Weymouth 2008, the new queen will represent her community in the Clare Festival Parade and Scallop Days Parade as well as the Weymouth July 1st Parade.
