Municipality of Argyle sets budget
Residential ratepayers in the Municipality of Argyle will pay the same tax rate while the commercial rate has gone up, according to figures approved Tuesday evening during a special meeting of Argyle Municipal Council.

The residential rate stays at $1.09 per $100 of assessment while the commercial rate has raised to $2.18 from $2.11, not as big an increase as originally considered.
The municipality’s operating budget for 2008-09 totals $6,349,072, a 6.8 per cent increase over the budget of 2007-08.

Tuesday’s budget presentation included a breakdown of the municipality’s expenditures.

Police, fire and other protective services account for the biggest single expenditure for the municipality, representing about a quarter of its budgeted expenditures for 2008-09 at over $1.5 million.

The next biggest slice of the expenditure pie is education, which is a little over $1.3 million, according to figures presented at Tuesday’s session.

The meeting also included the approval of a capital budget totalling $1,387,000.

The biggest expenditures on the capital side are the extension of the Tusket sewer system to the Tusket Industrial Park and the West Pubnico sewer pump station upgrade.
