Region declines request from Liverpool Fire Fighters Association
A request from the Liverpool Fire Fighters Association to cover honourary fire fighters for workers compensation was declined by Region of Queens Municipality council.

“We value the service provided by fire fighters and honour those who have retired but in this instance, it seems prudent to council to stay with the current policy,” explained Mayor John Leefe.

The Liverpool Fire Fighters Association made its first request two years ago.

It was denied.

“We couldn’t get a fix on the numbers, so the potential was there to be a significant number of people who had retired from active service to be covered,” he said. “There were just too many if’s for council to conclude that the coverage should be extended.”

The Region of Queens Municipality has covered the cost of worker’s compensation premiums for active fire fighters since amalgamation.

Medical coverage is provided a well.

He noted, council agreed they couldn’t just offer this to fire fighters and honourary fire fighters from just one department.

In turn, the region decided to stay with the long-standing policy in which only active fire fighters are covered.
