Cheering success

A local cheerleading team deserves its own round of applause – or a cheer. In their second year, the West Hants Middle School Sabres Cheerleading Team is enjoying solid success.

Competing in eight competitions this season -- including Cheer Expo Nationals where they placed second -- the team topped off their year with a first place win at home in the April 23 NSSAF Western Regionals.

Coach Nadine Brown is new to the school, but has seen many teams in her 13 years of coaching. She is “extremely impressed with the interest and dedication of the athletes at West Hants Middle School.

“WHMS cheerleaders have been very impressive to the judges and a favorite to the fans,” Brown said. “I continually hear comments about the WHMS cheerleading team’s great character, manners, spirit and sportsmanship.”

Tryouts in November drew 80 students keen on filing the team’s 30 spots, Brown reported. And the sport’s popularity is growing province wide, she added, with cheerleading competitions becoming some of the best attended events in the NSSAF.

Brown and the Sabres would like to thank their parents and community for their ongoing support. “Support that is imperative to the athletes participation and success.”
