Fishermen seek public’s support with free lobster give-away
Event has to be postponed, though, due to lack of location
Might as well just give them away?
That’s what fishermen in P.E.I. were considering doing with their lobsters as a means of attracting public attention and support to their plight when it comes to shore prices.
Shore prices have been the lowest in years, causing serious financial burden to many fishermen in the province. The fishermen say they need the public’s support in their plight to seek, what they all, a fairer price. A free lobster give-away was seen as a way to get the public behind them.
But the event, that had been slated for May 21, had to be postponed. The fishermen had hoped to use an area of the Charlottetown Mall parking lot for the give-away but the space was not available.
“What may be done later in the season is under discussion,” said Frenette. “Fishermen are certainly in a bind and need the public’s support. Low shore prices affect every part of our rural economy and touch every Islander in one way or another. Public pressure on large processors to pay a fair price can help everyone.”
