A reassurance from Health Minister Chris D’Entremont that the Bayside Home expansion will start next month is music to the ears of Shaun Hatfield, chair of the building committee. Hatfield met with D’Entremont earlier this month.
“I think it was a very favorable meeting,” said Hatfield.
“He made a strong verbal assurance that the budget for Bayside Home would be approved in three weeks. What they are looking for is a final submission from our project managers,” he said.
Hatfield says the Bayside Home project in Barrington is unique in terms of other nursing home situations.
“The main thing is that other nursing homes are basically adding on about 10-beds or 20-beds to a 50-bed facility. We’re adding 40-beds to a 20-bed facility and so the cost incurred from that is much greater for our project.
“It’s kind of like most other facilities already have the house and they are adding a porch, but Bayside Home has a porch and we’re adding a house on,” said Hatfield.
Community space, kitchen space, and laundry space are just some of the areas that will need to be redesigned for 62 residents.
The size of the existing facility will be tripling at an estimated project cost of 16 million dollars.
The Municipality of Barrington (MoB) and Town of Clark’s Harbour are providing $250,000 and $30,000 respectively towards the expansion. MoB has also donated land.
Bayside Home has a staff of 40 but with the expansion, more RN’s, LPN’s, CCA’s, housekeeping and laundry staff will be required. The estimated date of completion is still 2010.
