Items of interest to Yarmouth area firefighters

10 MacNeil Avenue Fire

On Wednesday, May 14, a call came at 7:17 p.m. for a possible electrical fire caused some fire damage to one room and heavy smoke damage with heat and water damage. Hose lines were advanced through the back and front entrances knocking the fire down very quickly. Fire officials and RCMP were investigating the cause after the fire department returned to quarters.

Maritime Champs

Once again bowlers representing the Yarmouth Fire Department are the maritime candlepin bowling champions. A weekend of bowling was held in Bible Hill, May 10 and 11, against teams from P.E.I. and Nova Scotia. Through a two string round robin and a very close and exciting match against Bible Hill #1 team, Yarmouth took the title by a total of nine pins. Yarmouth’s Hank Nickerson rolled the high single of 143, Rob Lowe had a top score with no mark with a 93. Other team members were Carol Lowe, Gerald Thibodeau, Paul Comeau and Louis Amirault. The Carleton Department defeated the Cobequid team to take the consolation award. Next years tournament is scheduled for P.E.I. where the bowling will be five pins.

Flea Market/Bake Sale

May 25 the Islands and District Fire Department’s annual flea market and bake sale will be held at the Surette’s Island fire hall from 1 to 3 p.m. The event is sponsored by the ladies auxiliary.

Ratepayers Meeting

On May 19 the West Pubnico Fire Prevention Association’s annual and ratepayers meeting will be held at the Centre de Pombcoup in West Pubnico at 7:30 p.m.

Canadian Fallen Firefighters Foundation

The annual general meeting took place in Ottawa on Friday, May 2. An audited financial statement was presented to the board and accepted. Other business was conducted with the feasibility of hiring an executive director. The aim of the foundation is to establish a Canadian memorial to all firefighters who have lost their lives in the line of duty.

Open House/Fun Day

Another reminder to keep Saturday, May 31, open for your visit to the Yarmouth fire hall. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. there will be something for everyone. Rain date will be June 14.

Date in History

May 22, 2007 a busy day for YFD as three calls were answered within a two-hour period. At 11:27 a.m. a vehicle fire on Harrington Drive resulted in a write off. 12:52 p.m. Engine 4 responded to an MVA on the airport stretch, and while at the scene received a call for a house fire at 31 Starrs Rd.
