While the business “wasn’t totally successful,” Pin Point Press’ vice-president Leta Lowthers and her Junior Achievement business partners got some provincial recognition.

Their company, made up of Central Kings and West Kings students, churned out novelty lapel buttons this year - making enough to pay back their shareholders but with nothing (except unsold stock) for themselves.

At the provincial Junior Achievement awards gala at the end of April in Halifax, though, Pin Point Press’ business skill and teamwork were recognized.

Lowthers was selected provincial vice-president of the year following a nomination by her own business partners, winning a trip in August to a national Junior Achievement conference in Toronto.

“You learn how to run a company, marketing, leadership,” she says.

Provincially, Lowthers also was recognized for 100 per cent attendance, and earned a pin as part of executive of the year and another for making an outstanding effort in the company.

Information technology manager Chantal Blair also earned her achiever pin for effort, as it was her role to transfer images and new design from paper and concepts to something that would fuse to the actually pin in production.

President Jeff Nichols, a West Kings student, earned an executive award with Lowthers, and also had 100 per cent attendance and earned a $100 sales pin - he sold a bulk order to his own school’s student shop.

Jessica Kenny earned a provincial merit award for outstanding effort and being most improved - this was her first year with JA, and she handled marketing and sales for Pin Point Press.

Lowthers says she’ll definitely be back with JA next year and, while product ideas are floating around, whoever is involved in the new company will make the final decision.

As for leftover Pin Point Press product, “I’m using the pins for my campaign to run for prime minister next year,” Lowthers says.
