A Carnival of the Animals, a grand zoological fantasy by Camille Saint-Saens, was the PWES spring concert held this year in the gym May 8. The lead team in top hat, ties and sashes opened the evening with “On With the Show” and provided introductions for each number.

Ms. Rhodenizer’s 4/5 class sang about the king of the beasts “See the Lions Brave and Mighty”.

The barnyard was full of the energetic chickens of Ms. Serieys’ Gr. 2/3 class doing the “Tennessee Wig-Walk”.

Mrs. Spicer’s Gr. 2/3 class was the “Turtle Brothers” in their green clothes and hard-shelled hats as they sang and recited a poem. There was lots of braying from the grey, floppy-eared donkeys of Mr. Long’s Gr. 2 class as they sang, “Ferdinando the Donkey”.

The song “When You Are Big” by Mr. Muttart’s Gr. 4/5 class shared the difficulties of a large elephant in finding a dance partner. The movements of Ms. Bowlby’s P/1 class as they sang “While the World Around Us” made their colourful costumes shimmer like fish moving through the water.

The P/1s stayed in the water as Mrs. Monk’s big-toothed crocodiles sang “A Bunch of Scales”. The students of Ms. Harnum’s class held large bones as they moved around the stage singing “Very Long Ago, In Another Age” and at the end of the song the bones formed themselves into a stage-wide dinosaur fossil.

Blue jays, cardinals, and eagles were among the colourful birds flying during “Birds are Flying” by Mrs. Baird’s P/1 class. “Life is a Beautiful Dream” for the striking white and black swans of Ms. MacKenzie’s Gr. 3 class.

The music and colour when the whole school was onstage for the finale “That’s the End of our Show” was impressive. The lead team kept the audience entertained as the students filed out with a reprise of their opening song.

Kudos to music teacher Mrs. Frampton, the costume-makers, stage construction and everyone involved in this production. It was excellent!
