The Launchers Athletics Our Kids, Our Future Auction Fundraiser April 26 raised more than $7,500 -- $1,500 of which went to the Valley Child Development Centre. The event drew people from the village and beyond to an evening which was entertaining as well as supportive of the two organizations.

The auditorium was lined with tables of items available for bids, over 80 in the silent auction and 12 that would be auctioned verbally.

Many well-known people from the motion pictures, television and sports contributed signed photos, clothing and other items and there were many donations of products and services from local businesses and individuals.

The evening opened with official greetings and a 50/50 activity called Heads or Tails. Audience members who made a $5 donation stood in a line in front of the stage. Everyone was asked to put a hand on their head or their “tail.” When emcee and Launchers coach Steve Wohlmuth flipped the coin everyone whose hand position matched the coin toss stayed up and everyone else sat down. This continued until there was only one person standing.

Two power-point presentations introduced the audience to the aims and objectives of the two organizations who would benefit from the evening. Beverages and delicious desserts were available throughout the evening.

Wohlmuth was presented with a volunteer award from the municipality by Coun. Janet Newton.

As participants socialized at their tables, they were also keeping an eye on the action at the tables of their favourite silent auction items, popping over to make sure that theirs was still the high bid before the winners were announced.

Another activity was the $10 envelope draw. Participants had 23 chances to win a prize. The first name drawn chose first from the prizes and so on until the 23rd name was drawn. There was an Atlantic SuperStore Price is Right, with a table full of items for which people had to guess the price. The actual cost of the groceries was $120.49 and the winning guess was $119.59!

These activities were interspersed with announcements of the winners of silent auction items and bidding on the verbal auction items. John Aker, President of Launchers Athletics, took a turn at the auctioneer’s mike, while Taya McGillivary was an entertaining Vanna White.

The celebrity item that went for the highest amount of money -- $300 -- was the Boston Bruins jersey autographed by the team and donated by Glen Murray. The item that got the highest bid for the entire evening -- $1,900 -- was the Frigidaire Front Load washer and dryer donated by Stage 2 and Frigidaire.

Wohlmuth wishes “to recognize the many people who contributed; those who donated and those who attended and made it a very successful event.”

Additional photos of the event can be found on the village website www.portwilliams.com www.portwilliams.com> in the Village Photo Gallery.
