Before visiting your local garden centre or nursery this spring you might want to spend a few hours chumming with some experts and listening to a pro providing tips on Successful Gardening.
Jim Spencer, owner of Spencers Garden Centre & Landscaping in Shelburne, is the guest speaker for the Yarmouth Garden Club’s annual open meeting on Tuesday, May 13 at the NSCC Burridge campus.

Spencer will be talking about how to garden successfully, a relatively easy thing to do he says, when you take away the negatives.

“Don’t fall for the plants with pretty flowers when you go to a nursery,” he said.

“You have to go there with a plan and subtract all of the plants that don’t fit your conditions.”

The frank-talking nurseryman also advises against relying too heavily on instructions in books and says that there is more leeway than people realize.

“Forget the books. They don’t take into account your time schedule,” he said.

Prior to Spencer’s 7 p.m. presentation there will be a plant sale starting at 6. Admission is $3 and there are plenty of door prizes.

The Yarmouth Garden Club, which now has a revised website at: yarmouthgardenclub.com, began in 1992 and now has approximately 85 members. The club meets monthly from September to June at NSCC Burridge and conducts garden tours in the area each summer. Membership costs $10.

On Sunday, May 25, garden club members will be participating in a bus trip to nurseries.

The club prints 5,000 garden tour brochures annually for distribution throughout the province.

Each summer the club holds a Flower Show & Tea. This year’s event takes place Aug. 2 at Beacon Church from 2 to 4 p.m.
