Nova Scotia Power crews converged on downtown Middleton early Wednesday morning after a delivery truck snagged wires and brought down several power poles.

The mishap took place on North Street at just before 9 a.m. when a truck entered a driveway between Price Chopper and AW Allen’s. Police said a pole had been bumped the day before, causing the wire to loop down across the entrance.

The top of a pole snapped off at the corner of North and Commercial streets while a second pole snapped at the ground and fell onto the roof of Price Chopper, snapping again close to the top of the pole.

Price Chopper was expected to remain closed for the day while an AW Allen’s spokesman wasn’t sure how much business could be carried on with no electricity.

The accident also pulled the service entrance from a house on North Street across from the mishap, and a homeowner further east on North Street said she too was without power.

RCMP and Nova Scotia Power crews were on at the scene shortly after the power went out. The accident did cause a momentary interruption at other Commercial Street businesses.

Power was expected to be restored to the area by Wednesday evening.
