Well-known Halifax-based musician Bruce Guthro is doing workshops in Horton High School and its feeder schools until May 15.
The musical series with Guthro is being sponsored by the Nova Scotia Educational Facilities Society, which was mandated by the Horton P3 contract.
One of the society’s board of directors, educator Mairi Balcolm, says funds were available to bring Guthro in to work with students in a total of eight schools. She said all the educators on the board are excited by the fact Guthro will be in local classrooms inspiring young musicians.
On Wednesday, May 14 Guthro will host the Horton Family Musical Showcase, which will feature talent from Port Williams Elementary, New Minas Elementary, Gaspereau Elementary, L. E. Shaw Elementary, Evangeline Middle School, Wolfville School, Hantsport School and Horton High School.
The 7 p.m. concert will take place at the Horton Performance Centre. Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for students. They are available at the school or Cochrane’s Pharmasave, Wolfville. All proceeds will go to support this year’s Horton Safe Grad program.
Having captivated audiences around the world, Guthro’s newest CD, Beautiful Life, was released first in Denmark, then in Canada and later in Germany. It’s his third solo recording.
A native of Sydney Mines, Guthro has also been lead singer for the Scottish super group Runrig for the past decade. He hosted CBC Television’s Songwriters' Circle and has picked up nine East Coast Music Awards and three Canadian Radio Music Awards, along with a SOCAN Songwriter’s Award.
