White Rock news
Another month has passed already. Wow! It’s time to purchase the plants and seeds for our gardens if you haven’t already.
I don’t have much of a green thumb when it comes to flowers, but I wish I did. For now, I think I’ll just stick to the vegetables. With rising fuel prices, the costs of groceries will rise too because of transportation costs, so I think I’ll pay particular care to the garden this year.
On May 20, there will be a concert at Gaspereau Elementary School. It will take place in the newly completed school gym. Family and community members can see Juno nominees Donna and Andy. The concert will begin at 12:20 p.m. followed by cake.
The Home and School will host a family dance May 23 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. for the students of Gaspereau School. A parent is needed to accompany the child with a ratio of three children to every one parent.
The EKM Community Health Board has recently approved a $7,000 grant for the renovation of the Gaspereau Elementary tennis courts, which brings the total raised so far to $8,500. There is a way to go yet to make the goal of $12,000, but we are definitely closer and with the community’s help, we can make it.
The search is still on for a President and Vice President of the Home and School for next year. If you’re interested, contact the school for more information.
There will be a turkey dinner May 9 at the Wolfville and District Lions Hall in Wolfville. This fundraiser is in support of the spring camp for students of Gaspereau School.
Anyone interested in attending this delicious turkey dinner can contact the school for ticket information. Prices are $10 per adult, $5 per student and children under five eat free. It takes place between 4:30 and 6:30 p.m. Take-out orders are welcome.
The last card party of the season took place April 29. The potluck supper that took place beforehand was delicious and had close to 40 people in attendance. After the delicious meal and the wonderful company, everyone gathered at their tables for an evening of cards.
There were ten-and-a-half tables in attendance. Helen Hutt won the women’s high and Fred Dominey the men’s high. The low for the evening went to Barb Sheffield.
Joanne Wile won the 50/50, Francis Ray won the door prize and the traveler went to John Griffith. Everyone had a wonderful time.
A heartfelt thank-you goes out to all of the volunteers that assisted with these weekly events, the setting up of the tables and chairs, the wonderful lunches and then the clean-up after. Everyone’s help is greatly appreciated.
Happy birthday to Tim Hancock and David Isnor, who celebrated May 2, and happy birthday to Terry Whiston, who will celebrate May 12.
Just a note for everyone to beware of telemarketing phone calls that say you have won a trip. If you win a trip then it should be free.
After spending time on the phone, they will tell you it only costs you so much to secure the prize package and you can pay it by Visa.
My philosophy is, don’t agree to anything over the phone. Make sure you have information in writing to go over and study before you agree to anything and read the fine print. These phone calls will be in abundance this time of year (tourist season is approaching).
I noticed there has been some surveying taking place just up the road from Gordon Young’s farm and that a road has been put in. It will be interesting to see what will take place – will it be new community members?
Remember to share your news and special events and I will share them so everyone can join in the event. Also remember, with the nicer weather, children will be traveling on their bikes on the roads. Both young and old alike should learn the rules for biking and wear their helmets.
Hey; maybe a bike safety course could be held at the hall – let me know if you think that’s a good idea. Maybe an ATV safety course could be arranged for interested community members, too.
These are just some thoughts for you to consider. Let me know what you think. Bye for now.
