Holocaust survivor to speak at Digby Regional High School
He offers the testimony of a survivor. Since 1989, Philip Riteman has spoken at numerous schools, churces, universities and corporations throughout Canada and the United States and he will present his talk May 12 at 7:30 p.m. in the Digby Regional High School Theatre.
Born in 1929 in the Brest-Litovsk region of Poland, Riteman was one of eight children. In 1941, German forces rounded up the Riteman family along with thousands of other Polish Jews, herding them ino the Pruzhany ghetto.
During the winter of 1942 the Ritemans were transported to the Auschiwitz concentration camp. By 1945, Riteman was the last member of his family. He was on a death march in 1945 when he was liberated by American soldiers in the Tyrolean Alps.
