Clad in safety vests and carrying bright red garbage bags and pointy sticks, members of the Lions Club, the Women’s Institute and the community walked along the roadside and climbed down into the ditches to collect garbage during the spring Adopt-a-Highway clean-up Sat., April 19.

The small group of volunteers removed trash from Highway 358 starting from Canard Acres to the Canard River and from the Cornwallis River Bridge to the railroad tracks.

It was a great day for the event, sunny and warm, and it felt good to get some exercise and do something good for the environment. Unfortunately, there are still a lot of inconsiderate coffee drinkers, smokers (don’t cars have ashtrays?) and consumers of fast food traveling our roads.

You can also tell there are some truckers who aren’t securing their loads properly. The place with the worst concentration of garbage was the parking area by the dyke. Even though there are garbage cans and recycling containers available, people were just throwing their garbage away.

Thanks to Wayne Blenkhorn for making all of the pointy sticks. They made the job a lot easier; not just by picking up the garbage, but they were a help getting in and out of the ditches.
