Theriault introduces ‘grandparenting’ bill
Liberal seniors critic Harold Theriault today introduced legislation to provide financial assistance to seniors raising their grandchildren.
“It is unreasonable to expect grandparents to have the same financial resources as parents,” says Theriault. “Grandparents are often retired and living on fixed incomes. The cost of caring for their grandchildren can be an overwhelming financial burden. They deserve some help.”
Theriault’s bill would provide grandparents who have custody of their grandchildren with the same financial resources that foster parents receive. Currently, the foster care program provides per diem rates between $14.46 and $21.02, depending on the age of the child.
“This legislation will help grandparents provide care and an appropriate quality of life to their grandchildren,” said Theriault. “There is no reason that grandparents shouldn’t get the same support that foster parents get.”
