April 26, 1973 – The town was requesting ratepayer approval for borrowing $850,000 to build a new sewage disposal plant. At an information session, town clerk Glen Pitman said the proposal would add about 21 cents to the town tax rate.
W.H. Horner, whose company was designing the sewage treatment plan, said the world had changed from 15 years earlier when a municipality’s sewage simply flowed untreated to the nearest body of water.
At the Little Cinema was the ‘The King of Marvin Gardens’, starring Jack Nicholson and Ellen Burstyn.
50 years ago
April 24, 1958 –M.S. Leonard, MLA for Digby and education and public works minister in the provincial government, announced the highway on Long Island from Tiverton to Freeport would be reconstructed to paving standard. It would be paved after being allowed to settle.
Canadian Pacific Railroad’s hotel division said the Digby Pines hotel would be open from June 27 to Sept. 1.
Area youngsters got a challenge from the Nova Scotia makers of Tom Thumb’s Krispy Fresh potato chips, but we wonder how many took it up. The company said that kids who cut 100 pictures of Tom Thumb from the front panel and mailed them to Canning would receive “absolutely free” a Tom Thumb Automatic Pencil or a Tom Thumb ballpoint pen.
Digby, Bear River and Weymouth announced they would switch to daylight saving time from midnight April 26.
Clark Gable, Yvonne DeCarlo and Sidney Poitier were stars of ‘Band of Angels’ at the Capitol Theatre.
60 years ago
April 22, 1948 – Digby ratepayers rejected a council proposal to borrow up to $207,000 for improvements to the town water system. Engineer Harold Loring of Chester said the water supply from Lily Lake was sufficient for a town of 8,000, but the single eight-inch water line was too small. And he said artesian wells would be just a stopgap measure until a larger pipeline was installed.
Ratepayers in Weymouth were in a more accepting mood, approving construction of a central rural high school in the village.
Clayton Snow was elected president of the Digby Badminton and Tennis Club. He noted that the court at Lour Lodge was in excellent condition and would be ready for play by May 1.
A plebiscite in Digby produced a low turnout—but strong support—for a switch to daylight saving time from April 24 to Sept. 25.
The federal Fisheries Research Board said East Coast fishermen and processors were missing a good bet by not developing a market for medium-sized flounder. Canadian fishermen weren’t keeping flounder of less than 15 inches overall, but New Englanders accepted 12-inch fish and their catch was 10 times as large.
In Bear River, Clifford ‘Kippy’ Harris (phone 69) was advertising 24-hour taxi service.
Edward G. Robinson, Ida Lupino and John Garfield were the stars of ‘The Sea Wolf’’ at the Capitol.
