Canning firefighters responded to two fires last week -- a grass fire and a debris fire, that were accidental in nature.
Deputy Chief Scott Cruickshank said Canning responded to a grass fire on Bains Road in Sheffield Mills late Wednesday afternoon, April 9. The fire was started accidentally by an electrical failure. Cruickshank estimated that about half an acre burned before firefighters extinguished the fire. The fire was somewhat confined by a nearby brook and the road.
Canning responded to an accidental fire on Summer Street, Canning, Wednesday evening. Cruickshank said this incident involved a pile of debris on fire. A couple of trees and yard items were damaged.
Greenwich firefighters responded to a two-vehicle collision near the traffic lights at the intersection of Highway 1, the Highway 101 Exit 11 access road and Highway 358 in Greenwich Tuesday afternoon, April 8. There were no injuries reported.

Kentville firefighters responded to a small fuel spill from a vehicle on Main Street Friday, April 4.
The Kentville department also responded to an alarm sounding at Valley Regional Hospital shortly after 6 p.m. on Saturday, April 5. Department spokesperson Ian Fairclough said the alarm was apparently set off by dust from a construction project in the vicinity. There was no fire.
Kentville firefighters responded to a smoke condition in town Sunday, April 6. A malfunctioning furnace caused the smoke.
Kentville firefighters were called to assist the Kentville Police in retrieving a motor scooter from the Cornwallis River behind the Glooscap Curling Club Wednesday. Fairclough said a fellow fishing in the area found the scooter. A couple of firefighters donned wet suits and pulled the scooter from the water.
Kentville responded to three calls in town last week about people burning grass and leaves. There is now a bylaw in effect in the Town of Kentville against this sort of burning. Firefighters extinguished the fires. The department would like to remind residents in town about the new bylaw. Burning within town limits can now result in a fine of up to $250.
The department would also like to remind county residents that permits for burning are now required from the Department of Natural Resources. Fairclough said everyone has to be extra careful around woods or grasslands, especially with cigarettes or other sources of ignition, because surface material is getting dryer and fires can ignite easily and spread quickly.
Kentville firefighters responded to a total of 107 emergency calls and investigations so far in the calendar year 2008 as of Friday, April 11.
