Kingston is facing close to an $8,000 repair bill after recent vandalism at its wastewater treatment facility.

At the village commission’s April 9 meeting, wastewater commissioner David Lowe detailed damage to the aerator unit that occurred when one or more large pieces of wood were thrown into the clarifier.

“What ever was thrown in there jammed up the arm on the unit and caused the gears to smash. It made a huge mess,” reported Lowe.

He said public works staff seems to think the damage resulted from a large board being heaved into the pond. The village has had similar problems with garbage being tossed into the facility and constructed a 12-foot fence around the area to discourage such activity. At the commission meeting, Lowe suggested covering the pond with netting as an added precaution.

Acadia Drive residents want asphalt

While the commission held it meeting, residents of Acadia Drive in Ravenwood Subdivision were presenting a paving petition to Kings County officials at the Kingston fire hall.

County chief adminsitartive officer Brian Smith reported the meeting was well attended and responses in favour of paving the road, now a gravel surface, were received from two-thirds of Acadia Drive residents. The petition will be presented to the next Kings County committee of the whole session.

What’s that noise?

Prompted by a request from a village resident, village commissioners considered implementation of a noise bylaw. No bylaw is in place, and commissioners agreed the matter would require further study.

“We don’t get a lot of noise complaints and, frankly, it would be pointless to create (a bylaw) if we can’t enforce it,” said public works commissioner Scott Peckford.

Staff were instructed to investigate whether RCMP or the county are responsible for responding to noise complaints.

Arenas in the future

Representatives of the village were included in an April 2 partnership discussion about a proposed new arena for 14 Wing Greenwood.

Recreation commissioner Steve Nickerson said any new facility is bound to affect the viability of the Western Kings Arena in Kingston. He suggests a member of the arena management group be included in future talks.

“If a brand new rink is going to go up (in Greenwood), then perhaps we’ll need to look at targeting new uses for the Kingston arena,” said Nickerson.

CFB Greenwood has hired a consultant to research options for a new facility, which could be located outside the boundaries of the base.

It was reported the March 29 fundraising dinner held by the Western Kings Rink Association netted a profit of $16,129. When the funds are applied to the group’s debt, a balance of $89,000 will remain.
