NKEC sweeps district team badminton

Teams from Northeast Kings Education Centre swept the team competition once again at the Kings-Hants District badminton championships held April 1-2 in Canning.
NKEC claimed the junior, intermediate and senior divisions in the team competition. The junior competition was Tuesday and the intermediate and senior Wednesday.
Individual competition at all three levels was held Thursday, April 3 (junior) and Monday, April 7 (intermediate and senior), also at NKEC.
In the junior division, NKEC’s team of Tineke Vanderweit (girls’ singles), Ashlin Warner (boys’ singles), Sarah Bennett and Gillian Tetlow (girls’ doubles), Alex Caldwell and Max Beveridge (boys’ doubles) and Melissa Rafuse and Louis Pearson (mixed doubles) won the district banner.
The team of Amy Scott, Sean Fraser, Allison Verge and Tanisha Cronin, Andrew Beaudin and Vincent Sauve, Serena Flawn and Christian Hill from Pine Ridge Middle School were runners-up and also advanced to the Western Region championships.
The junior team from Coldbrook placed third overall.
At the intermediate level, the NKEC team of Laura Roy, Joe Huyer-Upton, Victoria Brewster and Paige Veinot, Ben Pate and Garrett Whitsit, Claire MacDougall and Joe Harper placed first and won the district banner.
West Kings, represented by Stephanie Scott, Patrick Perry, Hilary Rawding and Hannah Dumouchel, Ryan Walker and Chris Potter finished in the runner-up position. West Kings had no mixed doubles team. The Horton intermediate team was third.
In the senior division, the NKEC contingent of Jacobi Vanderweit, Logan Coffill, Mishelle Melvin and Christine Manning, Ian Manning and Blake Brown and Jenny McGinis and Paul Manning captured the district banner.
Placing second was the Horton team of Kendra Cleary, Sam Mills-Holland, Lisa Fuller and Stephanie Howatt, James Mills-Holland and Justin Barkhouse, Lindsay Harris and Angus Morgan. The West Kings senior team placed third overall.
The top two teams from each division advance to the regional tournament set for Friday and Saturday in Bridgewater.
